Airport TriprCHICAGO - To express their strong support for a third airport in Chicagoland, State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D – Olympia Fields), federal officials and a group of other Illinois lawmakers today met with U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx to urge federal officials to expedite final approval of the project.  

“Local and national leaders came together to show their intense support for a new airport for the south suburbs to be built as soon as possible. In spurring on the federal review procedure, we are doing our part to expedite the process in Washington,” Sen. Hutchinson said.  

The FAA and U.S. Department of Transportation were urged by those at the meeting to accelerate the review the plans for the airport. The new airport would be a boon to the regional economy as well as help sustain America’s aviation supremacy.  

“Our Chicago airports are not only a national hub of traffic, but an international destination and travel stop for millions of travelers, and any one of these visitors will tell you that the congestion in our Chicago airports is dizzying,” Hutchinson said. “The proposed South Suburban Airport would be a pivotal force in providing jobs for the region and a smoother, more efficient travel experience for all those visiting and coming home to Chicago.”  

Joining Hutchinson at the meeting with Secretary Foxx were: U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, Federal Aviation Administration Deputy Administrator Michael Whitaker, State Senator Jacqueline Collins, State Reps. Will Davis, Anthony DeLuca, Al Riley, Marcus Evans and Larry Walsh Jr., and Ed Paesel, executive director of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association.
